We talk a lot about skills and effective learning with Total Words, but the whole approach was built on feeling the need to change the energy for kids who are struggling to read. As we’ve gone on, the importance of having daily feedback has been obvious. It’s such a positive difference when kids have come up to me to tell me what they have achieved, actually telling me precisely how many words they have read. They know it’s a real achievement and it belongs to them. It’s such a beautiful conversation opener when a child spontaneously tells us and shows us how they are excited by their learning.
It's easy to get carried away with the logic and theory in building a new reading system, but the real joy is in seeing what children can do as a result of this approach.
